EDUCATION
SHINE functions as an art studio for Rutgers University-Newark students enrolled in advanced photography, independent study, internship, and Visual Art senior thesis courses. Additionally, SHINE is a partner in the Pathways to Academic Success (PAS) high school program facilitated by the Newark City of Learning Collaborative, Joseph C. Cornwall Center for Metropolitan Studies.
In both the college and high school courses, students are taught the fundamentals of studio photography but more importantly they are guided to participate in the overall mission of SHINE, posing the question and challenge of co-building a portrait studio for the 21st Century in downtown Newark.
STUDENT COLLABORATIONS
SHINE Portrait Studio offers complimentary portraits to people and organizations that have a kindred spirit to our mission. These collaborative photography-based projects grow out of conversations between SHINE's staff and people who make general studio inquiries; students in a photography class; community partners; visiting resident curators & artists; and individual artists, designers, entrepreneurs, etc., in the Newark, NJ community.
